Inside this build

Every major decision here started from the same question: how much darkness can you use before a space tips from moody into oppressive?

Quite a lot, it turns out — if you earn it. Tall ceiling, floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows, and white walls do the balancing work, keeping the palette breathing. Chamclad wood siding accents, paired with natural fir timbers on the exterior and the warm wood and gold accents throughout the interior provide the counterweight. The darkness reads as deliberate rather than heavy. Natural light finds its way in from every angle, which is what lets the whole design work.

The ensuite was where the brief went furthest. The design team drew from the idea of an enclosed cave look that the client loved: floor-to-ceiling dark herringbone tile, a matte black soaker tub at the centre with gold fixtures as the warm counterpart. A large corner window looking into the trees pulls the outside in, and pendant lights give the room its glow. Immersive on purpose.

The kitchen follows the same logic: deep, rich and moody yet warm. Honed black quartz countertops and hexagonal tile backsplash pair with gold finishes and warm wood accents to balance the space.

The butlers pantry and powder room feature Navy walls — a deliberate colour choice that breaks the palette without breaking the mood. This kind of design move proves that restraint isn’t about playing it safe, it’s about knowing exactly when to take a risk.

Outside, exposed timber beams and a fire pit extend the living space into the seasons that matter most to an outdoorsy couple. The garage serves as the working grounds for a professional with lots of passion projects. Some people just know how to commit.
