The Camerons are here again to quash some common myths about building custom homes.
Building a home can be a big undertaking, with a lot of decisions to be made and it can be difficult to know where to start. There are also a lot of myths about custom homes that can make the process seem even more daunting.
Here are 7 of the most common myths about building custom homes:
Myth #1: You have to purchase a lot before you hire a builder.
Typically a buyer might purchase land first because they want to secure their spot in a new neighborhood or development. But, it’s not essential to have land purchased prior to meeting with a builder. Imagine having the added benefit of including a Builder in the conversation? We have the skills and knowledge to evaluate the land and accurately estimate the costs of hooking up utilities and land development.
Home Builders, like Cameron, often can help with the purchase of land. When you come in to meet with us, ask us about land purchases.
Myth #2: Custom homes are more expensive.
While it’s true that custom homes can be more expensive depending on what you pick and finishes you choose, but it doesn’t have to be! We work within all different budget levels and will assist you through the process to ensure we are selecting things that work for you and your budget.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to customizing a home, but we have tons of tried and true products that fit into great budget numbers while still looking super awesome and custom in your home.
There’s a custom home option for everyone. It really depends on how wild you go with your ideas (hello outdoor pool!), or if you’re happy to stick to the essentials and focus on the important rooms like kitchen and bathroom.
So it’s up to you. Keep it simple and customize the essentials, or splash out on that quartz fireplace you’ve always wanted!
Myth #3: Custom homes take too long to build.
Ok ok, it might not be the same quick timeline as moving into a pre-existing home, but custom homes don’t take forever to build. The truth is, the timeline for building a custom home varies depending on the complexity of the design and the availability of materials and labor. In most cases, a custom home can be built in 4-6 months.
Myth #4: You need to be Antoni Gaudí
Antoni Gaudí, who? Ya know, Casa Batlló.. only the greatest architect of our generation. 94K Google reviews.
While we can drool over those builds together, you don’t need to know about design or architecture to build a custom home — that’s what your builder and interior designers are for! It’s more important to have a good sense of what you like and what your style is, and we can help you all the way. In fact, we really love doing that with you.
Our design team will draw up a first draft of the home you have dreamt about, giving ample time for questions and revisions. Then our in house interior design team will go through the entire house design process with you. They will give you insight and suggestions the whole way. Work with us and we’ll help make your home a true expression of your style, personality, and values.
Myth #5: You need a huge budget to build a custom home.
Not all homes we build make it on Selling Sunset (…but some could 😜)
While it’s true that you can spend as much or as little as you want on a custom home, you don’t need a huge budget to build one. There are plenty of ways to stay on budget when building a custom home, like choosing our designer selected finishes for flooring, cabinets, & fireplaces. Not only do they look great, they are sourced for quality and affordability.
With some careful planning, you can build an amazing custom home within your budget. Check out one of our recent spec homes – Woodland-City Sleek, we’ve called it.

Myth #6: Custom homes are only for high flying CEO’s
Though luxury custom homes do exist, they are not the only type of custom home out there. In fact, there are many affordable custom homes being built every day by regular people with modest budgets. With careful planning you can be well on your way to purchasing your own custom home.
Take our Inspire range of homes for instance; great for those who want to skip the stress of the major build decisions, while still having control over key features around the home. For example: Sometimes clients will update one room design like the kitchen or ensuite or level up with premium lighting, countertops, and flooring finishes.
Our Vision Homes are great for those customers who desire Quality Upgrades. These builds are tailored to your lifestyle needs with a wide array of custom options. Dream of having a wet bar in your living room, open wooden staircase, a decked out entertainment media room, or mini golf course on the lawn? Myth #7: Getting a construction loan is hard
A mortgage is different when it comes to a construction loan, however it isn’t the only way to get financed for a custom home. Your chosen home builder can help you navigate the loan process and help you find the right lender and financing option. We have great partners that can assist you in getting exactly what you need for financing.
